  • ESAN University and Redinter organized the First Conference on Sustainability and Energy, which brought together the public sector, experts and international business leaders to analyze formulas that allow progress towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future in Ibero-America.

  • The conference highlighted the importance of the deployment of electricity grids that promote the transformation of the electricity system.

On July 16, ESAN University and Redinter held the "I Conference on Sustainability and Energy: The sustainable future passes through Ibero-America", an event that brought together national and international representatives from the public and private sectors and analyzed formulas that allow progress towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future in the region.

Through seven thematic axes, the main topics for the sector were put on the agenda: Global and regional trends in energy sustainability; Networks and renewable energies; Energy efficiency and electrification of the matrix; Energy and development in Latin America; Biodiversity; SDGs, indigenous peoples and social innovation, and training as a cornerstone of sustainable development. In each of these, the main achievements and advances in sustainable development were highlighted, as well as the challenges that still remain, in order to exchange knowledge, share best practices and explore new opportunities to promote sustainability.

Jaime Serida, rector of ESAN University, stressed that the event allowed the integration of representatives of academia and the business sector in order to build a more sustainable future. "ESAN and Redinter demonstrated their commitment to achieve a more effective energy transition, both in Peru and Latin America, achieving a tangible impact on the population and the environment. Among the more than 25 experts who joined the conference, I want to highlight the effort of Beatriz Corredor, president of Redeia, and her team to develop initiatives that raise awareness about the importance of renewable energies, both in companies and in citizens themselves," he said.

"We cannot think of a sustainable future in which the continent with the greatest biodiversity in the world and the largest share of renewables is not a protagonist in the ecological transition. Europe, especially Spain, and Latin America, must be partners and allies on the path of this transformation, which must be fair and inclusive," said Beatriz Corredor, president of Redeia, Redinter's parent company, while its CEO, Roberto García Merino, focused on the need to increase investment in electricity grids. "The challenge of attracting capital is crucial, because without transmission there is no transition, and from Redeia, we confirm the commitment to continue collaborating in the transformation of the region's electricity system."

Through the joint effort, both organizations seek to catalyze the change towards a more resilient and environmentally friendly energy model. With concrete actions like this, Redinter and ESAN University demonstrate their shared commitment to sustainable development and their determination to lead the transition towards a brighter energy future for all.

During the day, the Deputy Minister of Electricity, Víctor Carlos Estrella, emphasized the importance of electricity interconnections and especially the project with Ecuador "that will provide security of supply for both countries and promote the development of commercial, industrial and service activities in the north of Peru." It is estimated that it will be put into service by the end of 2027.

In the opening presentation on global and regional trends in energy sustainability, Andrés Rebolledo, Executive Secretary of the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) stressed that "Latin America and the Caribbean are at the forefront of the global energy transformation, so advancing sustainability commitments is a main political objective and together we can make a big difference."

The binomial networks and renewable energies were the focus of the first panel of the morning in which the development of electricity grids was addressed as "one of the most important enabling conditions for the deployment of the energy transition," according to Rosendo Ramírez, professor of the Master's Degree in Energy Management at ESAN. Subsequently, at the table on energy efficiency and electrification of the parent company, Felisa Ros, Managing Director Networks Americas of ENGIE, delved into the need to promote the adoption of renewable energies and stressed that "our priority is the fair energy transition and becoming Net Zero Carbon by 2045". Mining, especially copper, and its contribution to the energy transition, occupied the last debate of the morning, a debate in which Julia Torreblanca, from the Cerro Verde Mining Society and the CEO of Atlantic Copper, Javier Targhetta, defended that the mining sector has also started on the path of sustainability.

"Without transmission, the energy transition is a fiction," were the words of Juan Ricardo Ortega, president of Grupo Energía Bogotá, at the opening of the second block of and added that "the countries of Latin America have a lot of potential to clean up, in the order of 80-90%, our energy matrices." The next table addressed the biodiversity challenge, where Raquel Soto, Deputy Minister of Strategic Development of Natural Resources of MINAM, focused on biodiversity as a source of resources for the development of the local population and on the measures in which the Ministry is working to mobilize resources for that population.Training and its importance in sustainable development was the focus of the closing of the day, where Albina Ruíz, former Minister of the Environment, highlighted the urgency that we must have to address these issues. "The crises of climate change, loss of biodiversity and environmental pollution do not wait. We need to take action and commit ourselves all."
